Annotations for Alice lee and elle mclemore shine a light reprise

Lyric: [HEATHER DUKE, spoken]
Annotation:
Heather Mcnamara was actually hallucinating all of the things Heather Duke said.

Lyric: You’re pathetic because you whine
Annotation:
In this hurtful environment, hurting or any sort of feeling that isn’t pride or something among those outlines is seen as whining. Heather McNamara is now showing her emotional side which is leading to others seeing her as whiney. And they call her as such to be cool or join the bandwagon of people like Heather Duke who say it. Heather Duke has more power as she has taken the role of the “Mythic Bitch” They see this as pathetic because of how stuck up their society.

Lyric: Whine, whine, whine
Annotation:

Lyric: Aww, look, Heather’s going to
Annotation:
This is Heather D.’s way of downgrading Heather M. She is talking to Heather M. like she needs to be talked down to, like that of a child. The ironic thing about all of this is that Heather D. is no more mature then Heather M. or any other student.

Lyric: Why not kill yourself?
Annotation:
This is the exact opposite of what Mrs. Fleming was trying to say her song, the song this song reprises. She is using the same upbeat and catchy song, twisted to make her fellow student, and closest friend she has left, kill herself. This shows just how twisted Duke is. She knows that her friend is close to the edge, so she pushes her further.

Lyric: You whine all night
Annotation:
“Whine all night” could imply that Heather MacNamara cries at night after school, or in elaboration, cries herself to sleep. A common sign of depression, or just a way to let out feelings when no one’s watching. Looking at the lyrics of Lifeboat, Everyone’s pushing Everyone’s fighting Storms are approaching There’s nowhere to hide If I say the wrong thing Or I wear the wrong outfit They’ll throw me right over the side Heather MacNamara probably needs this. Heather Duke realizes this and takes it to her advantage, using it as a taunt.

Lyric: You don’t deserve to live
Annotation:
After Heather Duke has repeatedly bullied Heather Macnamara, she is finally ready to commit suicide, using pills. Heather Duke encourages this, telling her to continue consuming the pills in hopes to never see her again. Heather Duke takes on this unneeded form of Heather Chandler, as seen in Candy Store as Heather Chandler pushes Heather Duke for stealing her line, creating a peek into what was going on between them. Therefore, Heather Duke tries to be Heather Chandler, and bully Macnamara to death.

Lyric: [H. DUKE, ENSEMBLE, H. DUKE & ENSEMBLE]
Annotation:
The ensemble is singing behind Duke. McNamara feels like everyone is against her (and they are). It’s not just Duke who’s bullying her.

Lyric: Here, have a sedative
Annotation:
This implies Heather Duke gave her the drugs she used. In the beginning Heather Duke asks Veronica if she can fake prescriptions.

Lyric: Like there’s no Santa Claus (Boo-hoo)
Annotation:
Duke is suggesting here that Heather M. is like a child finding out that Santa Claus isn’t real. This is another condemnation of immature behavior by a teenage girl (Who is, mind you, not mature herself, considering she is harassing people for nothing more than the satisfaction of doing so) kicking someone who’s down. Heather Chandler did this exact thing to Veronica in “Candy Store” This is a chilling way of saying that even though Duke was bullied by Heather C., the Heather in charge never changes her behavior. There is always going to be someone to mistreat.

Lyric: Die alone, die alone
 Die alone, die alone
Annotation:
After “Lifeboat,” it becomes apparent that dying alone is one of Heather McNamara’s biggest fears. It is ultimately her fear of loneliness and rejection that leads to her suicide attempt directly after these final lines.

Lyric: (Whine) Your ass is off the team
(Whine) Go on and bitch and moan
(Whine) You don’t deserve the dream
 (Whine) You’re gonna die alone
Annotation:
This is referencing back to Candy Store. where Chandler is listing things for Veronica to do

Lyric: Whine, whine, whine all night
Annotation:
This is a reference to Shine a Light. where they are encouraging the students to tell their insecurities. Now it is being used against Mcnamara ad a sign of humilation.

Lyric: Stupid child proof caps
Annotation:
The scene opens up with Heather McNamara struggling to open a bottle of pills that she plans to overdose on. Her frustration at being unable to open child proof containers introduces the image of a “whiny little kid”, a characterization that Heather Duke will mock H. McNamara with throughout the song.
